For me, “No Death, No Fear” (Khong Diet Khong Sinh Dung So Hai) feels more like a healing therapy than a dry philosophical text. Previously, I often avoided thinking about death or loss, but this book has taught me how to look directly at it with peaceful eyes.

A New Perspective on Birth and Death

Thich Nhat Hanh explains a beautiful concept: life is not a straight line with a beginning (birth) and an end (death). Everything simply transforms from one form to another.

He uses the very relatable image of a cloud: “A cloud never dies. It can become rain or snow or ice.” Similarly, our loved ones are not lost; they continue in us, through every smile, every step, and the seeds of goodness they have sown. This brings profound comfort to anyone who has experienced the pain of separation.

Practicing the Present

The book doesn’t just offer theory but provides concrete practices:

  • Mindful breathing: Returning to the breath to calm emotions.
  • Walking meditation: Taking steps in awareness to touch life deeply.
  • Looking deeply: Recognizing the presence of loved ones right here within ourselves.

I particularly love the passages where Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us to “dwell happily in the present moment.” When we live deeply in this moment, fear of the future or obsession with the past naturally dissolves. The mantra: “No death, no fear” becomes an anchor whenever my heart feels unsteady.

Thich Nhat Hanh’s writing style is always simple, concise, and full of compassion. There are passages I didn’t fully understand on the first read, but every time I return to them at different stages of my life, I discover a new layer of meaning.

This is not a book to read once and shelve. It is a bedside companion; whenever my mind is unsettled, I open a few pages, breathe deeply, and remind myself: “My true nature is no-birth and no-death. I am free.”
