4/5
Read from: June 2022 - June 2022

"Sharp, awakening words about life resilience. Concise writing style yet heavy with meaning. Reminds us to live proudly - when you shine bright enough, all contempt becomes meaningless."

Your Future Is Too Precious, Don’t Waste It (Hậu Vận Rất Đắt, Xin Đừng Lãng Phí) delivers sharp, awakening messages about life resilience. With concise yet weighty prose, the book affirms that success and financial independence are the sweetest responses to prejudice.

Reading Context

I read this book in June 2022, right after finishing the National High School Graduation Exam. Unlike “The Alchemist” which I read 3 times, I only read this once - but it was enough for its sharp words to leave a lasting impression.

Distinctive Writing Style

The book follows a Chinese storytelling style with characters named like:

  • Little A (Tiểu A) - representing ordinary young people
  • Director Wang (Giám đốc Vương) - successful individuals
  • Fan Shengmei (Phàn Thánh Mỹ) - individuals with their own stories

Through brief stories of these characters, the author conveys lessons about life, money, and success.

Core Message: Your Future Is Too Precious

Book page from Your Future Is Too Precious

“Your future is too precious, so precious that we must exchange it with our most valuable time and energy. You must understand your own worth, you must understand your position, you must understand your ideals. Don’t keep focusing on trivial matters - go do what truly matters to you…”

“Future” (hậu vận) here doesn’t just mean luck, but the entire span of life ahead. Every decision today affects tomorrow. And if the future is precious, don’t waste it on unworthy things.

Main Lessons

1. Live Proudly Like a King

The book advises: Live proudly like a king, because when you shine bright enough, all contempt becomes meaningless.

Not arrogance, but pride in yourself - in what you’ve achieved, in the path you’re walking. When you live confidently and successfully, harsh words and prejudice will no longer hurt you.

2. Success Is the Sweetest Response

Instead of arguing or rebutting prejudice and criticism, the author affirms that success and financial independence are the sweetest responses.

Don’t waste energy explaining to those who don’t want to understand. Spend that energy building yourself - let success speak for itself.

3. Tolerance Instead of Resentment

Instead of drowning in resentment or childish emotions, we’re advised to learn tolerance.

Resentment only drains your own energy. They’ve already hurt you - don’t let them continue hurting you by nurturing hatred in your heart.

4. Think Like the Wealthy

The book teaches us to think like the wealthy: turn difficulties into motivation, replace dreams with reality.

The poor dream about being rich. The rich act to become rich. Difficulties are obstacles to the poor, opportunities to the rich - chances to overcome and become stronger.

5. Understand Yourself

Three things you must understand:

  • Understand your worth: What do you deserve?
  • Understand your position: Where are you on life’s journey?
  • Understand your ideals: Where do you want to go?

When you understand these three things, you’ll stop wasting time on trivial matters.

Writing Style: Concise Yet Weighty

The book’s special feature is its concise yet weighty prose. No long-windedness, no flowery language - straight to the point.

Each line hits like a wake-up call, rousing us from insecurity and time-wasting on unworthy things. After reading one page, you might sit contemplating for hours.

Comparison with Other Books

Unlike “The Alchemist” with its gentle, magical storytelling, “Your Future Is Too Precious” is straightforward, pragmatic, even somewhat stern.

If Tony Buổi Sáng’s “On the Runway” teaches us to live generously, this book teaches us to live proudly. Both are valuable, just from different perspectives.

Why 4 Stars?

  • Powerful awakening: Sharp reminders about self-worth
  • Pragmatic: Not vague theory but very practical
  • Unique style: Concise, weighty
  • Perfect timing: Read after exams, when entering a new life phase

Why not 5 stars: Only read once, haven’t developed the deep emotional connection I have with “The Alchemist”. Perhaps re-reading later will bring different feelings.

Memorable Quote

“Live proudly like a king, because when you shine bright enough, all contempt becomes meaningless.”

Final Thoughts

“Your Future Is Too Precious, Don’t Waste It” is for those wasting time on toxic relationships, negative thoughts, and trivial unworthy matters.

At age 20, after finishing high school and entering university and a new life, the reminders in this book came at the right time: Don’t waste your precious future. Live brightly enough to prove yourself.

Your future is too precious. Don’t let anyone or anything unworthy take it away.
